MORE INFO

Although the series is focused on the unprecedented influence of digital media on popular culture, it is fundamentally anchored by a familiar story. The documentary is as much about dreams of stardom, what it takes to “make it,” and the reality of show business, as it is about how social media has rewritten the rules of the entertainment industry.

In addition to engaging with these themes, the motion graphics also speak to the individual experiences of the pop stars-in-training by channeling their optimistic, youthful, and unapologetically girly energy.

A vibrating shade of violet, super bold typography, and punchy animation style form the foundation for the documentary’s distinctive branding. These elements are applied to a broad collection of graphic assets that support storytelling throughout the series.

Graphics were inspired by the constant note-taking and scrutiny by judges in T&D.

The series is divided into two parts: the first focuses on Training & Development (T&D), where the girls learn to perfect their skills as performers, and the second follows the “Dream Academy” competition show, where the final pop group is determined over a series of public-facing missions that incorporate online fan voting.

Animated infographics shed light on the data-driven approach used in Kpop training to developing performers. Graphics are directly inspired by the extensive record-keeping and evaluations by judges. Gestural annotations and worksheet-style graphics immerse viewers in the rigorous world of T&D.

As the series enters the competition phase, annotations disappear and graphics take on a refined and digital quality that reflects the narrative’s shift towards examining the influence of social media on pop music success.
